Sample Book Layout

A Guide to Historic Architectural Resources and Historic Preservation in Unincorporated Hillsborough County

This was a 128-page guide prepared for a county government. I wrote the house descriptions and some of the transitional text. I edited other text and photographed all the structures. I did the layout and I supervised the printing at a local printing plant. The budget was very limited but I think we did well with what we had available.

Other text was copied from county ordinances, from various historic preservation resources, and from an earlier book the county had commissioned that detailed the history.

The book was printed with some pages/photos in color and some in black-and-white. There was a color cover and some colored maps in the index.

As editor/writer, I worked with a board that had many ideas about how to prepare this book. It had to be both interesting and technically-useful and that was not always an easy mix to accomplish.

The links below will show you some sample pages from the book. Most contain photos and will take a few seconds to load. Have patience.

Examples below are images only and the image quality has been reduced to speed loading the pages into your browser. Original photos were digital, shot at 8 megapixels, permitting high-quality reproduction for any purpose. Other graphics were scanned in using a 2400x2400 scanner, which exceeded the original quality of the graphics.

Photos and graphics, throughout the book with the exception of the maps, were "feathered" to blend at the edges with the accompanying text.
